Remembering 9/11 as a Sikh

How life would change for so many of us. 20 years ago, we couldn't believe what we were seeing. We’ll never forget those who died, the many injured and the countless left to endure the loss of loved ones. It's imperative to take a second of your day to pay respects.

As a Sikh and others in and out of my community, 9/11 is also a day that would change our lives forever. With the news being broken of the planes being hijacked by "Terrorists" who apparently "looked like me" - (their words not mine) the hate crimes began.

Balbir Singh Sodhi, a successful American gas station owner got murdered in the aftermath of 9/11. The first of several cases as supposed acts of retaliation. The same goes for so many of our Muslim brothers and sisters who endured much harassment and still.

From personal experience, touring and exhibiting has not always been the nicest experience. An interesting observation wearing a chunni has certain public in open conversation with me, but wearing my chunni had more drama. Staring, moving away on public transport, being called "Terrorist" to name a few of many incidents.

Sikhs are often misidentified as Terrorists or Muslims by citizens who know nothing or little about religion and faith. And before its said, NO! it does not make it right targeting, or throwing another's faith on the line. It takes an open mind and will to learn and celebrate our differences.

But as always, my community knows how to rise above any challenge, it comes naturally and instilled in our blood from the time of our Gurus. It's why we're known to be warriors and serve humanity first.

As a Sikh who has seen and experienced the aftermath of 9/11, today is not only about remembering each and every individual who lost their life meaninglessly on the WTC attack. Its also a reminder and a pledge to carry the name high, of those in and out of my community who lost their lives being murdered, attacked and STILL getting discriminated on for "looking like them" - (again, their words not mine)…

A Child Without A Shadow by Professor Shaul Harel BOOK REVIEW

The moving story of Professor Shaul Harel’s life from darkness to light, from Holocaust survivor to world expert in pediatric neurology and child development.

This is the story of Prof. Shaul Harel, formerly Charlie Hilsberg, who lost his shadow in 1942 at only five years old, when he was separated from his family and surroundings and saved from the furnaces of Auschwitz by the Belgian resistance.

This book reveals his story, from his time as a “hidden child” in France and Belgium during the Holocaust, through his experiences in orphanages, his immigration to Israel, the serious injury he sustained in his military service, the choice to study medicine, and lastly the mark he has made in the field of pediatric neurology and child development in Israel and in the world.

A story of overcoming impossible trauma and reaching professional and personal success against all odds. The book channels a universal message of survival, optimism, and hope.

Why am I Sikh? Why do I want to marry a Sikh man?

 Hello,readers!

So, I was a practicing Buddhist for a majority of my life. I've been aware of Sikhism and the belief system behind it. A couple of years I started reading more in depth about Sikhism. I attended a couple of gurdwaras, which is considered a place of worship for Sikhs. Just reading the rich history and culture of these brave men that martyred themselves for the sake of there religion made me quite interested. I converted instantly after reading these stories and how brave these men are. They do so many selfless acts, which is known as seva.

I've only told two people I know about my conversion and they found it quite interesting. They found it even more interesting that I want to marry a Sikh man. Ive been striving to learn more about the culture and the Punjabi language. I even was taught how to make samsosas, pakoray and chappattis at my local gurdwara.

I feel highly attracted to men that wear turbans and have long beard. I think they look wise and extremely handsome. I want to marry an Amritdhari Sikh man, even though that may sound impossible. An Amritdhari Sikh follows the 5 K's and are completely devoted to the Gurus and Waheguru ji.

I would have never thought years ago I would be following this path or wanting to marry Sardar ji Sikh man. I really hope I'll marry one in the next couple of years or so.

Elida,The Forbidden Ghetto Girl by Zipora Klein Jakob BOOK REVIEW

The unforgettable story of a forbidden girl born in Kovno Ghetto, despite the Nazi prohibition on Jewish women giving birth, and the risk of death her parents faced by defying the law.

1943, Kovno Ghetto: despite fear of the threatening death sentence decreed by the Nazi’s, Dr. Jonah Friedman, and his wife Tzila, decide to bring a daughter into the world, their firstborn, whom they name Elida, which in Hebrew means non-birth.

To ensure their child’s chance of survival, when Elida was only three months old, her parents smuggled her out of the ghetto into the arms of a Lithuanian family who lived on a farm.

When the Nazis eradicated the entire Kovno Ghetto, Jonah and Tzila are among those killed. Their only daughter was left orphaned and alone, dependent on the kindness of strangers.

The story of the forbidden girl’s life is gripping and hard to believe. She changes families, countries, and continents, and even her name, more than once. In her never-ending pursuit of love, Elida attempts to rebuild her identity and relinquish her miserable fate.

Hello,readers!

I received "Elida, The Forbidden Girl" by Zipora Klein Jakob.

The book is about a forbidden girl named Elida. She is forbidden because the Nazi prohibited births by Jewish individuals. And they are usually executed when defying these laws.

Her parents gave her to another to raise, when she was only 3 months old. Elida's parents are later executed by Nazi's.

Elida went through so much to find her true identity. An amazing story that would bring a tears to your eyes. She showed great strength after being tossed to multiple different families and finally realizing the truth about her existent. I couldn't believe this was a real person. I truly inspired to know she never gave up on life.

Please Don't Confuse Us!

In these pressing times, just a friendly reminder to all our brothers and sisters around the world. The #Sikh community is still healing, still rebuilding, still suffering from the hate attacks and misidentification post 9/11.

We are against injustices all across the world and in specifically Afghanistan. In these times, it's important to educate ourselves, so we are hoping we can work together to save our Afgan brothers and sisters and ensure no community is being wrongfully discriminated against!

Pray for Afghanistan

The U.S. must not abandon people to this human rights crisis and must see through a commitment to civilians and refugees.

The United States has a responsibility to provide a safe haven for refugees created by this conflict, as one of the main drivers of the conflict. After pursuing 20 years of failed policies that have harmed Afghans, the very least the United States can do is provide refuge for those seeking it, along with a safe, accessible, expedited way to seek asylum, as the Taliban will control the country by force, repressing vulnerable Afghans.

While it is in the United States' and Afghanistan’s best interests for the United States to withdraw, the United States owes Afghans support and a commitment to peace.

What Really Is by Ruth Bar Shalev BOOK REVIEW

Our true nature is simple and beautiful, thoughts are complicated and intricate. Learn to know the difference.

Our true nature is always present, in each moment, as it is now. We didn’t create it and we can’t stop it. Yet we’ve been taught that what we can’t perceive with our mind and senses is not real, that intuition is unreliable and living like this is dangerous, immature and irresponsible.

The truth is contrary to this. Our thoughts and understandings are by their very nature temporary and fragile. They come from the assumption that we can actually know or control things. And so we defend, attack, withdraw, and even kill or die for these beliefs. But when we do, the essence of our true spirit is brutally pushed aside and we lose so much of life.

Hello,readers!

I received "What Really Is" by Ruth Bar Shalev to review on my blog!

What Really Is comes to convey life and the world, not as the interpreting mind describes them, but
 their original form.

A truly wonderful and interesting book. It questions life and the understanding of the mind of an individual.

Starving Billionaires: The History of Inflation and HyperInflation by Kendrick Fernandez BOOK REVIEW

Inflation is as violent as a mugger, as frightening as an armed robber and as deadly as a hit man.

This quote, by former President US Ronald Reagan, reflects the suffering of millions of innocent victims of runaway inflation and hyperinflation throughout history.

The reality of hyperinflations is exponential price increases, worthless currency, and food shortages. They are normally preceded by war, revolution, famine, or pandemics. In some cases, they are the results of decades of fiscal malpractice. Inflation has become a prominent subject of discussion in the United States and across the world.

There are 17 recorded hyperinflations in modern history. The most devastating hyperinflation happened just after World War II in one of the Axis powers when prices surged by 4.19 quintillion percent. One quintillion is one followed by 29 zeros. Prices doubled every few hours. The most recent hyperinflation episode is happening in Venezuela since 2016. America has never had hyperinflation, but they came close twice.

This book looks at ten prominent hyperinflations across history. We look at what led to the hyperinflation, the first troubling signs, and government malpractices. We also pay close attention to life for the common man, life for wealthy government officials, and popular inflation hedges employed by people and businesses. Finally, we look at how the country attempted to solve the inflation problem and deleverage the currency.

Hello, readers!

Remembering Oak Creek.

Nine years ago today, a neo-Nazi gunman murdered six Sikh Americans and permanently injured several more at a gurdwara in Oak Creek, Wisconsin.

We solemnly remember Paramjit Kaur Saini, Sita Singh, Ranjit Singh, Prakash Singh, Suveg Singh Khattra, and Satwant Singh Kaleka, who were killed on that horrific day. We also honor Baba Punjab Singh, who passed away on March 2, 2020 due to complications related to the injuries he sustained during the attack. And we continue to be inspired by the perseverance of those who were also critically injured at the time: Bhai Santokh Singh and Lt. Brian Murphy.

I continue to pray for these individuals and their families, and are inspired by the strength of the entire Oak Creek sangat, which set a powerful example of resilience for the entire nation.
